Chennai to Pondicherry by Cab: Fare, Route & Travel Time Guide

Chennai to Pondicherry is the most-booked outstation run from the city — weekend travellers, corporate offsites, airport connections and family trips all take the same 150 km corridor south. A little planning on route choice, timing and pricing model makes the difference between a relaxed coastal drive and a slow, overpriced crawl. Here is how we advise our own customers to plan it.

Choosing your route: ECR vs NH32

The East Coast Road is the scenic choice — sea views, Mahabalipuram on the way, and plenty of food stops. It is also narrower and slower through the beach-town stretches. The NH32 route via Tindivanam is wider, faster and better for early-morning airport-style timings. Tell your driver your priority — views or velocity — before you start, not at the fork.

How the fare is decided

For a same-day or weekend return, a round-trip package with a daily kilometre slab and driver bata is usually the economical choice — the car stays with you in Pondicherry. If you are staying on or travelling onward, ask for a one-way drop so you pay only for the distance travelled. Either way, insist on an all-inclusive quote covering fuel, tolls and bata before the trip starts.

Timing the run

Leaving Chennai before 6:30 AM gets you past the city edge and most of the ECR traffic — you will be parking near White Town by breakfast on a good day. Friday evenings and Sunday return windows are the heaviest; add 45 to 60 minutes of buffer if you must travel then.

Quick booking checklist

  • Confirm one-way or round-trip pricing before booking
  • Ask whether tolls, parking and driver bata are included
  • Share your pickup point precisely — OMR pickups join ECR fastest
  • For groups above 6, a tempo traveller beats two sedans on cost
